Spotify

Spotify

Spotify has been around for a good year and hasn't changed much; it's still one of our favorite applications for music on-demand and music library management. Taking cues from iTunes, Spotify integrates your existing music libraries with its own giant catalog of songs from artists all over the world. Where it trumps iTunes is that all the music is pretty much available to stream for free, with offline functionality for an addition ten bucks a month. In their in-app advertisements, claimss like "Piracy is overrated" are quite justified; it's seriously one of the most easiest ways to grab just about any song you can think of, and stellar for discovering new music.
And while we've already covered the highlights of the layout and the general functions of the service, Spotify has since then been pushing users to take advantage of its own app catalog to further enhance the playlist creation experience.

EMDB

Keeping track of a large DVD collection is no small job, especially if you also like to save and collect credits, historical data, and trivia about your favorite movies. Eric's Movie Data Base, aka EMDB, is a free database program specifically configured for managing your DVD collection. But EMDB does more than just manage your movie collection: It also imports tons of cool information about each title from the Internet Movie Database, or IMDb, including images, credits, and technical data, and saves it in its database. You can access the full listings any time you open EMDB instead of having to go online and look each movie up every time you need to know something about it. It can also keep track of the DVDs you loan to friends so you might actually get some of them back now and then. The latest release of Wicked & Wild's EMDB supports Windows 8.
EMDB's user interface displayed three empty shelves that fill with DVD cover images as you add them to the database. The shelves are nicely rendered in a realistic wood grain, but if you don't like the look, clicking View Mode on the toolbar changes the view to a classic database list view, including a header for tracking Loaned videos. Of course, empty shelves aren't much good, so the next thing we did was add some titles from our DVD collection. It's totally easy: Click Add, type in your movie's name, plus an alternate title, if there is one, and press Search IMDb. EMDB returned a list of results with similar names; we simply had to click the right one to import the DVD's cover picture, credits, and more and automatically populate the program's data fields. Of course, we could easily edit the data or enter it directly, add more images, and even specify technical playback data such as codec, region code, aspect ratio, and even video format. When everything was just right, we could click OK to finish or Add and Continue to add more movies.
DVD collectors should check out EMDB. It's a fun way to manage your movies.

Free Clipboard Manager

Free Clipboard Manager

Forgetting what you've copied to your clipboard is such a common occurrence that it's become a joke on forums. This download wants to help you never forget again. Free Clipboard Manger will display dozens of items that you've recently copied to your clipboard in one place.
Free Clipboard Manger doesn't need any installation; you can run it right after you unzip it. It sits neatly on the bottom of your screen. If you move the program into your line of sight, it's actually nice to look at. This program not only displays any text you clip, but images, too. Unfortunately, if you snip text from the Web, most of the coding and HTML come with it in the preview. Thankfully, recopying the text from the program doesn't fill your document with HTML. It does keep its original formatting, though. Any time you have something saved in your clipboard, you can move it to your favorites or save it to your computer. However, the program doesn't let you choose a destination folder for the things you save. When you finally need to clean out your clipboard, you can do it one by one or all at once with a simple right-click.
Though a few weird hiccups hold the program back from being perfect, it's still a useful tool. If you frequently complain that you can't copy multiple things at once, this tiny download will help you out. Free Clipboard Manager is a treat to multitaskers, students, and anyone else who has to keep a lot of balls in the air at once.

Altarsoft PDF Reader

Altarsoft PDF Reader

Individuals, small business owners, and others who need to use PDFs often find themselves between a rock and a hard place; the PDF tools they need are just too expensive. Fortunately, more and more freeware alternatives are putting good, basic PDF utilities in the hands of such users before they're forced to pay big bucks for big-box programs. Altarsoft's PDF Reader is a fine example. It's not a full-fledged PDF solution; it doesn't create PDFs, for instance, but it does display and edit them. It's not flashy; it's just a free tool for viewing and editing PDFs. It can open, display, and save PDFs; encrypt and decrypt them; add watermarks, thumbnails, and attachments; merge and split documents; insert images, text, and blank pages; and more. PDF Reader is compatible with Windows versions from 98 to 8.
PDF Reader's user interface is clean and efficient, with just enough color to make it visually interesting but not enough to dispel the businesslike appearance. Easy-to-read icons made navigating and zooming a snap. From the Tools menu, we could Add, Convert, Extract, Insert, and Split documents in various ways, including converting images to PDFs. The Views menu accesses optional Preview and Attachment panels we could toggle open or leave closed for a cleaner look. We tend to take it for granted that most users looking for PDF utilities have some experience with PDFs, though that's not always so. But PDF Reader's menu bar, toolbar, and layout shouldn't be difficult even for new users to manage. Experienced users will probably be able to start right in with the program. We did just that, opening a series of test PDFs we keep for just such a purpose. PDF Reader rendered the documents as well as any of the premium products we've seen, and essentially as well as our system's graphics could manage. Saved files were fully compatible with Adobe and other PDF apps.
Altarsoft's PDF Reader is an overachiever. It does an excellent job at what it does - and it actually does more than we expected. If you're looking for an alternative to the usual PDF tools, give it a try.
